North Texas delivered a statement performance against UNLV, controlling the game from the opening stages and pulling away for a convincing 44-6 victory behind an opportunistic defense and a productive rushing attack.
The Mean Green took an early 3-0 lead with a field goal before the defense produced the first major momentum swing. UNLV quarterback Jackson Arnold was hit while attempting to escape pressure and lost the football, giving North Texas possession.
North Texas soon turned its advantage into touchdowns.
Quarterback Drew Mestemaker connected with running back Jahiem White on a short pass, and White did the rest. He made a defender miss, found space along the sideline and raced into the end zone for his second touchdown of the season.
That play provided an early indication of what would become a difficult afternoon for the UNLV defense.
White repeatedly created problems both as a runner and receiver, combining quickness with the ability to run through arm tackles. Early in the second half, he broke into the open field for another long gain before finishing the drive with his second touchdown of the game.
North Texas also received production from its quarterback on the ground. A keeper near the goal line resulted in another touchdown late in the first half, helping the Mean Green build a three-score advantage heading toward halftime.
UNLV showed occasional signs of life. Arnold connected with Taz Reddicks on one of his better throws of the afternoon, and the Rebels managed to generate scoring opportunities. But drives repeatedly stalled before reaching the end zone, leaving UNLV dependent on field goals.
Turnovers made the comeback attempt even more difficult.
In the second half, Arnold completed a pass over the middle only to have the ball knocked loose. North Texas recovered, ending another UNLV possession and giving the Mean Green offense another opportunity.
The North Texas defense also kept consistent pressure on Arnold. Brendan Reese recorded a sack as part of a defensive front that made it difficult for the UNLV offense to establish any sustained rhythm.
North Texas continued adding to its lead as the game progressed. Another rushing touchdown extended the margin, and a late field goal helped produce the final 44-6 score.
The result was particularly notable because the matchup appeared capable of becoming a much more competitive game.
Instead, North Texas controlled nearly every important phase.
The Mean Green created turnovers, limited UNLV's scoring opportunities and consistently produced explosive plays on offense. White was at the center of much of that success, providing the kind of versatile backfield threat capable of turning routine plays into significant gains.
There will be tougher tests ahead, but this was the type of early-season performance that can establish confidence.
North Texas didn't simply beat UNLV. From the opening kickoff through the final possession, the Mean Green rarely allowed the outcome to feel in doubt.
