SMU combined an effective running game, timely passing and a disruptive defense to steadily pull away from Missouri State in a matchup at Robert W. Plaster Stadium.
Missouri State entered the game following a successful first season at the FBS level but with a new head coach in Casey Woods, the former SMU offensive coordinator. The familiarity between the programs added another element to a game in which SMU eventually established control on both sides of the ball.
After its opening possession ended quickly, SMU found its offensive rhythm on its next opportunity. The Mustangs used the RPO game, an explosive run and a play-action completion to move deep into Missouri State territory. A methodical red-zone attack finished with a rushing touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
Missouri State answered with a field goal, but SMU continued producing sustained drives. Quarterback Kevin Jennings repeatedly extended plays with his legs while also taking advantage of openings in the Bears' secondary. A third-down completion that turned into a touchdown gave the Mustangs another score and helped create a two-possession advantage before halftime.
Missouri State attempted to emphasize its running game after halftime, but SMU's defense consistently disrupted the adjustment. The Mustangs created negative-yardage plays, pressured the quarterback and repeatedly forced the Bears into difficult third-down situations.
Meanwhile, SMU continued to expand its lead. Jennings directed another touchdown drive in the third quarter, and a long play-action completion later moved the Mustangs deep into Missouri State territory before another touchdown pushed the advantage to 28-3.
By the fourth quarter, SMU had established control of the line of scrimmage and could increasingly rely on its running game. The Mustangs added a field goal and another rushing touchdown while their defense continued limiting Missouri State's opportunities.
The performance reflected a balanced formula for SMU: establish the run, give Jennings manageable situations, create explosive plays when opportunities appeared and pressure Missouri State into mistakes. By the closing minutes, the Mustangs were able to return to the ground game and run out the clock on a convincing road performance.
